A Wee Update

Excited to have a fresh start in this new year. We were blessed with a windfall of home learning books and some supplies from a homeschooling mom whose kids are all grown now. It is an abundance of resources! Maelle is already enjoying the really great selection of science and nature books we were given. After reading a book called "The Birth of the Earth" she told me she wanted to paint me a picture. It was a secret endeavour; I wasn't allowed to see it until she had finished. And tah-dah: it's a painting of our solar system (copied from the book). I love that she did this little 'project' completely on her own initiative.

Apart from the science and nature books, we are reading Little House in the Big Woods, which she received for Christmas. She is totally enthralled by Laura's stories!

On Friday she is starting an art class at 4Cats art studio. I am so excited for her to do this! These classes come highly recommended by a friend:

ARTIST FOCUS

learn about and be inspired by Emily Carr & Gustav Klimt - 10 week class
  • kids get to work in a variety of mediums, taking inspiration from the works of famous artists
  • we talk about age-appropriate art history
  • trained in fine arts, our professional curators tell captivating and inspiring stories in a fun and humorous manner about the life and work of the artist being introduced, creating an environment that encourages the love of learning, creativity, and fun
  • each child receives an Artist Focus storybook and trading card
  • trading card comes with a secret code that you can enter on the 4Cats website to watch an animated cartoon of the artist's storybook

  • Maelle's piano playing is coming along quite well at the moment. She hadn't taken much of a solid interest in it since September, but is now getting comfortable playing some chords with her left hand while playing the melody with her right and I think the fuller sound is very appealing to her which is leading to more play.

She is also very much enjoying ballet and I love to see her develop her identity as a dancer. In November we were able to see her during parent attendance week. Here's a video from that class:
